V. Alton Moody papers, 1919-1937.

Papers relating to V. Alton Moody's research on international agrarian reform after World War I. A limited amount of research on domestic agrarian reform is included. Papers consist of correspondence, notes, and drafts, and related published material, which include official reports. Most of these reports are in German. Also included is a typescript of the 1846 plantation diary of John P. L. Stone, a Louisiana resident, possibly a sugarcane planter of White Castle. Stone writes about sugarcane production and local weather, as well as the cultivation of other crops.

Vernie Alton Moody was an economic historian and a member of the faculty at Iowa State University in the first part of the 20th century. In 1913, he obtained a Master of Arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, La. After World War I, he continued his studies at the University of Michigan under the historian Ulrich B. Phillips. He earned his doctorate degree in 1923, writing a dissertation on slavery on Louisiana sugar plantations. Moody also pursued his interest in the economic history...
